Geography
Turkey is one of the few countries which spreads over two continents. A small portion (3%) lays in Europe (it is called Tracië) the major part of the country lays in Asia (called the Anatolia plain). Europe and Asia are separated by the Bosporus, the sea from Marmara and the Darnanellen.
The total surface of Turkey is around 800.000 km².
Turkey is encircled by seas on three sides: the Aegean Sea to the west, the Black Sea to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Turkey's direct neighbours are, on the European side are: Bulgaria and Greece; and in Asia: Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Iraq and Syria.
Because of the shear size of Turkey you will find a wide variety of landscapes. Near the coast is a fertile coastal strip with many harmonious spaces and beautiful beaches and cliffs that hang over the sea. The inland offers a spectacular and seemingly endless steppe. In Cappadocia the unique moon like scenery is breathtaking.  Near Pamukkale you will find unforgettable limestone terraces. In the North and Northeast the high mountains stand tall with peaks rising 5000 meter above sea level. The highest mountain in Turkey is the Ararat (5156m). It is on this mountain, as the famous biblical story stipulates, that Noah's Ark crashed.

Time difference
In Turkey it is 1 hour later then in The Netherlands and 2 hours later then in the U.K.

Climate
Because of the southern location of Turkey, people think that a sub tropic climate would be found all over the country. This is not really the case. Natural barriers, like the northern mountains, mean the country has in fact several climate zones. On the west coast and the south coast is a Mediterranean climate. The summers are hot and the winters are mild. The south coast has higher temperatures, especially in the winter. The mainland has a land climate. The summers are hot and dry and the winter are cold with snow in the eastern part. The area surrounding the Black Sea has a mild climate both in summer and winter, and some rain year round.

Population
Turkey's population is composed of several ethnic backgrounds. The biggest group  being the Turks. The origin of the Turks is traced to the steppes of Asia. They came to Anatolia around 3000 B.C. Besides the Turks, Kurds also live in Turkey. They are found all across Turkey, Iraq and Iran. Also, there are Arabs, who live near the Syrian border; Armenians, in Istanbul and it's surroundings; Greeks, also in the area of Istanbul and Jews (mostly of Spanish origin), in Lhasen, near the Black Sea.
In total 63 million people live in Turkey.
Despite their different backgrounds, all Turkish people have got one thing in common: hospitality. This is especially true near the coast where the population is at it's most hospitable. But people in the mainland are also curious and are usually glad to meet a "stranger". If you are invited for a cup of tea, don't worry, this is the simplest act of Turkish hospitality.

Transportation
Like everywhere else in the world, people like to move from place to place. There are several ways to this. Most of these means of transportation are well known but some are not. The most popular means of transportation in Turkey is the Dolmus.  Dolmus literally means "full". The Dolmus is a small bus with a specific route. Along this route you can hop on the bus simply by holding up your hand. These busses are cheap but has the name indicates, they can be very full.
The taxi is another popular means of transportation, it's more comfortable then the Dolmus but a bit more expensive. Prices are well below prices in Europe. Note that during the night the fare is higher.
The railway network is not that developed in Turkey so if you want to travel great distances, the bus is the way to go. The bus is usually quicker and covers more destinations. The network of bus lines is quite well developed all around Turkey. Travelling by train or bus isn't expensive in comparison to European standards.
You can also rent a car. Very popular is the 4x4. Be advised though when renting a car that the traffic, conditions and driver behaviours might be considerably different then what you are used to.

Shopping
For shopping fans, Turkey is a real Eldorado. Every village or town has got many shops with wide varieties of products. Turkey is known for it's leather, carpets, clothes, handbags and gold. Compared to Europe the prices are a little lower. Never accept the first price from a shop keeper, this price is just an opening offer. It is expected from you to make a counter offer. This is a standard ritual. Without proper negotiations the seller won't feel he has worked hard enough that day. Be realistic with negotiations though, the shop keeper does have to earn some money as well. In the bigger cities with larger modern shopping malls it is not standard to negotiate the price.

Folklore
Cultural traditions are very important in Turkey. These traditions and rituals are found in all the different folkloric backgrounds spread out all over the country.
Near the coast it is offered as entertainment for tourists while in the mainland it is still used in events such as parties or special occasions. Every region has it's own unique folklore with dances, instruments, costumes, etc.

Holidays
The date of the religious holidays are dependent of the Islamic calendar which is based on the lunar calendar. The dates are never the same because a lunar calendar year has 354 days. The most important religious holidays take place at the end of the Ramadan. They are the Sugar festivities (3 days) and the Offer festivities (4 days). Note that during these days pretty much everything is closed.
Besides these religious holidays there are also official holidays. January 1st is new year's day, April 23rd is the day of national independence, May 1st is the day of spring, May 19th is youth and sports day, May 27th is the day of the constitution, August 30th memorial day for the victory of 1922 and October 29th is the day of the republic.

Clothing
Generally speaking lightly dressed is the way to go, but in the off season it can cool down quite a bit at night. A warm sweater isn't a superfluous luxury. In tourist areas it is widely accepted to wear shorts or miniskirts. In the mainland though it is not appreciated if you show a lot of skin. Naked legs, bellies and shoulders (both for men and women) show disrespect to the local people. When visiting a mosque it is obligated that women wear a headscarf. Most of the time it is possible to "rent" or borrow one of them at the mosque entrance. Also always take your shoes off when in a mosque. This also applies when you visit people in their homes. Small tip: wear shorts that have zip up pant legs when visiting the mainland and it's mosques.

Language
The Turkish language belongs to the Ural-Altaische languages who's origins are found in the Finsisch-Oegrische. The Turkish language is written using Roman characters. Worldwide 150 million people speak Turkish.
